THE PURCHASE OF BLOOD
I will begin by giving definitions to some words that will be used in this write up.
We do know and understand that the word purchase means and implies acquiring something by paying for it. In other words to buy something it has a cost to it. So you can buy it formally or acquire something through payment, but someone has to pay for it.
Redemption is the privilege to become something or somebody new, honourable and valuable. It implies you were rescued from sin, and evil and returned to beauty, and significance. Ephesians 1:7 says that “In Him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses“.
To redeem means to buy back or to secure the freedom of someone in bondage. Because of our sins, we were all in spiritual bondage. This act of redemption through blood is a central concept in Christian theology that signifies the ultimate sacrifice made by Jesus to reconcile humanity to God.
Luke in (Acts 20:28), says “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over which the Holy Ghost has made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which He hath purchased with His own blood. So here he is warning the leaders to be extremely mindful of the importance of their responsibility towards those committed to their charge because of their high value to God. You may ask, why was their value high. It was high because Jesus purchased them with His precious blood.
Blood is considered a life-giving substance that is essential for sustaining physical life. The Bible states that the life of the flesh is in the blood (Leviticus 17:11). This implies that Blood was central to the sacrificial system.
Blood also signifies covenant relationships. In Exodus 24:8, Moses sprinkled blood on the people to confirm the covenant between God and Israel. This signifies commitment and the binding nature of the covenant.
This concept of “The Purchase of blood” in the Bible, originated in the Old Testament and was rooted in the idea of sacrifice and atonement. Animal sacrifice, such as those described in Leviticus, was then offered to cover the cost for sins, and desire for purification, so that relationship with God could be restored. However, these sacrifices were seen as a temporary and imperfect sacrifice and really did not completely atone for sin.
It wasn’t until Jesus went to the cross that His sacrifice of His own blood was presented as the ultimate perfect and permanent solution to the problem of humanity’s sin (Hebrews 9:22).
This blood of Jesus has the power to wash away sins and grant forgiveness, providing redemption. This leads us into a new covenant with God (Luke 22:20) resulting in a new life in Christ involving a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit and also the promise of eternal life. Jesus’s blood is seen as not only purifying, but also enabling believers to have direct access and thus an intimate relationship with God.
Jesus, our ultimate High Priest had His Blood sprinkled seven times to atone for the sin for all eternity. Seven is number of completion. They include, sweating blood, struck and beaten, beard plucked out, back scourged, head pierced with crown of thorns, crucified and side pierced.
The seven redemptive benefits of the blood of the lamb therefore include, Forgiveness, Cleansing, Redemption, Justification, Sanctification, Peace and Access.
In Christ’s blood, we receive life that death cannot conquer. He has established a new covenant through His blood and He intercedes on our behalf to enable us enter more fully into his blood covenant.
We overcome the devil and his works when we testify to what Jesus’s blood has accomplished. They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony. They did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death (Revelation 12:11).
So in summary, the “purchase of blood” highlights the significance of Jesus’s sacrifice in achieving redemption, forgiveness and a new life for those who believe in Him.
This heralds the belief that Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross was the payment for the sins of humanity, effectively purchasing their redemption and freedom from sin and its consequences.
This purchase of blood is for you and I. We therefore give Him thanks and praise for such a costly gift to us. Let us remain ever grateful for the extravagant and unconditional love of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
