THE POWER OF GOD’S LOVE, AND WHAT IT HAS ACCOMPLISHED FOR YOU AND ME
God is Love (1 John 4:7). This love is described as unconditional, unchanging, extravagant, extraordinary, pure and beautiful, to mention a few.
John in (1 John 3:1) describes it as lavish love that is poured out over us. The word lavish signifies abundant, generous and extravagant giving, particularly in the context of God’s grace and blessings. God’s love is so much more than what a natural mother showers on her infant.
We talk often about other aspects of God’s love. However, I would like to focus more on the power of God’s love and therefore what it accomplished for you and for me. You see, love is the most powerful force on earth, and a greater revelation of this, would radically change, and empower the Body of Christ. This is thus my first prayer request, for us all as we discuss this, that God would grant us a deeper revelation of His love for us.
We are told in that it was when we were yet sinners that Christ died for us. In other words, I was dead in sin, but because of the compassionate and merciful heart of God, I was united into the very heart of Jesus. Wow, is this not truly amazing, that we didn’t have to do anything to earn His love. Under normal circumstances, we didn’t qualify for it, but in God’s circumstances, Jesus qualified us. This automatically removes man from the driving seat of love, placing God squarely in the driving seat. This means that we have to look away from ourselves, and unto Him in the driving seat to receive this undeserving, and costly love that He has lavishly and lovingly poured on us. It is only as we receive this love, we can share it in our world.
God, knowing how powerful His love is, and how radically it would transform our hearts if we could receive it fully to enable us respond to it, decided to make it His first commandment for us to obey. He didn’t make it a suggestion, but He made it a commandment. He commanded us to love Him with all our hearts and with all our mind, soul and strength. And then He added that we love our neighbours as ourselves. Thus, having received His love and reciprocated back in love to Him, from that place of our heart joined with His, we then can share this love, we have received first with our neighbours, then with the world around us, that is in such desperate need of love. In addition, love has the power to drive out fear (1 John 4:18).
We are in a world where wars, battles and violence abounds. Economies of nations are groping for the way forward. There is so much distrust between nations. So much bitterness and hatred abound. In the past, we obeyed the dark rule of the earthly realm, living as rebellious children subject to God’s wrath, until the power of the love of God took hold of us.
The undeserving nature of God’s love, implies that staying in an intimate relationship with the Source, God is the only way to sustain this love in us. We thus come out of a place of hate and enter into the Kingdom of light.
We also see here the model for love that God expects us to share. Many singers and poets have tried to describe love, but we need to turn to our Source of love, our God, to help us understand its power from His perspective. Jesus modelled a love that is unconditional and extravagant.
As humans we prefer that people are nice to us, and then we reciprocate, by being nice too. God’s love doesn’t work like that. The greatest place to see God’s love is on the Cross where Jesus suffered and allowed Himself to be killed by those He loved, so He could secure their redemption.
It was God’s grace that paid for my salvation. Grace is understood as God’s riches at Christ’s expense. This was driven by love.
Here again, I am able to inherit with Jesus and thus be empowered as I learn to walk in the fullness of God. God’s love prepares good works for me to walk in. We thus can see not only God’s ability to transfer me into His kingdom, but also changing my position so that I am reigning with Him from a heavenly perspective. I am no longer struggling with stuff down here with limited power, but I am therefore co-seated with Christ. From there, I am learning to rule with Him, throughout the ages to come.
God’s power as seen in me, united with the resurrected Jesus, will therefore know no bounds. It is unlimited. The power of God’s love as seen in my union with Christ will enable me walk in healing like Christ did. This will cause me to be impactful in joining with Christ to destroy the works of Satan.
This is our expectation as we receive the love of God, respond to it, and from that place of our heart united with Christ, accomplish more than what Christ accomplished when He walked the earth. How powerful this is. This is God in us, powered by His love. This is the promise given to us in (John 14:12 ).
Loving God also empowers us to obey God’s commandments (John 14:15). This is the way others get to know we are sons and daughters of the Most High God. This is also what makes God the Father invite God the Son and the Holy Spirit to come and make you and I become His dwelling place.
This was the intention of God right from the beginning, that our ability to lean into Him would cause the power of His love for us to transform our hearts and therefore our lives.
