EXPANDING GOD'S KINGDOM
I would like to speak a little about God’s Kingdom, and Jesus Christ as the King who rules and reigns, and how you and I are a part of expanding His Kingdom here on earth.
Amongst all that Jesus came to accomplish in His three years of ministry, He also came to introduce His Kingdom and took every opportunity to describe and speak about it.
1. JESUS IS THE KING
He told us that He is the King and that we are called to prioritise God’s will and righteousness above all else. Matthew 6:33…” But seek first (aim at, strive after) His Kingdom and His righteousness and then all these things taken together will be given you besides.
2. GOD’S KINGDOM IS NOT A LOCATION
This Kingdom is not a location, but is a spiritual realm. It involves us actively participating and co-labouring to expand the kingdom. Luke 17:21 tells us… ‘Nor will people say, Look here it is ,or see it is there, For behold, the Kingdom is in within you’. This means that it’s in your heart and among you.
3. WE ARE TO HELP OTHERS EXPERIENCE GOD’S KINGDOM
Matthew 3:2 says the Kingdom of heaven is near. As believers we carry God’s Kingdom but it’s our ability to express it or cause it to be manifested that helps others experience the Kingdom of God on earth. In other words we all have a responsibility to enable others around us, experience His kingdom. We all have been given gifts, so the Holy Spirit has to come on us to enable it be activated, such that God’s Kingdom is seen in power. He comes INTO us for ourselves and UPON us for others.
4. GOD’S POWERFUL GOSPEL
Expressing God’s Kingdom involves embracing Kingdom values e.g love, humility etc, and doing things the Kingdom way as that was Jesus’s focus. Jesus taught us to demonstrate God's power, through acts of Healing, Deliverance, the Prophetic, and living a miraculous life style. In fact the miracles come to confirm that His Kingdom has come near to the person.
We are called to follow the model Jesus gave us so we spread His full gospel. It’s easy to remove some parts of the gospel we aren’t so keen on, and preach a gospel without power but that can’t be termed as Jesus’s full gospel. He gave us the commission in Mark 16:15-18 telling us “Go into all the world and preach the good news to every creature. He who believes and trusts in and relies on the Gospel and Him, whom it sets forth, and is baptized, will be saved. But he who does not believe will be condemned. And these attesting signs will accompany those who believe. In My name, they will drive out demons, they will speak in new languages. They will pick up serpents and even if they drink anything deadly, it will not hurt them. They will lay their hands on the sick, and they will get well.
So then the Lord Jesus after He had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and He sat down at the right hand of God. And the disciples went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord kept working with them and confirming their message by the attesting signs and miracles that closely accompanied it”.
Did we notice that the Lord was confirming what He told them to do as they did it. He can’t confirm when we are doing stuff our own way. I always say, you get your human results when it is your human way, but you get God’s result when you are doing it God’s way. There is a big difference between the two.
5. EXPANDING GOD’S KINGDOM ON EARTH (BRINGING GOD’S KINGDOM ON EARTH) AS IT IS IN HEAVEN.
So serious was the Lord about this that when His disciples asked Him to teach them to pray He taught them to pray about this. They must have been watching Him spend time with His Heavenly Father, so one day they asked Him to teach them (Luke 11:2- 4). And He said to them, when you pray, say Our Father, Who is in heaven. So the first thing He desired was to give them a sense of belonging to the same Father as He had. He was giving them their Identity here, and helping them understand they had a Father who loved and cared for them. They were not orphans. They, like Him had a Father.
He then went on, Hallowed be Your Name, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. This in other words is saying, let heaven invade earth. So we are to bring down the reign and purposes of heaven to earth. So if there is no sickness in heaven, we have no business allowing it on earth.
So, Jesus taught them about praying for the realigning of His reign and heavenly purpose on earth as it was in heaven. He taught them to pray God’s will down. He showed them they had a role to play in expanding the Kingdom of God down here. And like everything else, we can’t accomplish it without asking in prayer for the help of the Holy Spirit. It is important therefore that we always pray the Lord’s Prayer.
TO ACCOMPLISH WHAT WE HAVE BEEN WRITING ABOUT, WE NEED THE PRESENCE AND THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT TO GUIDE US.
